Tucked away in the heart of southern Tanzania, Ruaha National Park is a hidden gem—untamed, wild, and wonderfully remote. Its dramatic landscapes, crowned by the meandering Great Ruaha River, unfold across rolling plateaus, rugged escarpments, ancient baobab groves, and sandy riverbeds that breathe life into the wilderness.
Set at an average altitude of 900 meters, with mountains rising to 1,600 meters in the south and nearly 1,900 meters in the west, Ruaha offers an ever-changing canvas of raw beauty. During the dry season, the park’s seasonal rivers draw animals from miles around, creating some of the most rewarding game viewing in Africa.
Wildlife Encounters
Ruaha is a sanctuary for massive elephant herds, with some of the highest concentrations in East Africa. The riverbanks host hundreds of buffalo, crocodiles bask in the sun, and hippos lounge in the cool water. Predators are also plentiful—lions, leopards, hyenas, and the elusive African wild dog roam freely.
One of Ruaha’s most iconic species is the Greater Kudu, with its majestic spiraling horns, often spotted among the rocky hills. The park is also a haven for bird lovers, boasting over 570 species, from vibrantly colored kingfishers to majestic raptors.
Ruaha is not just a destination—it’s a journey into the soul of wild Africa. Remote, authentic, and rich in biodiversity, it invites you to slow down, listen deeply, and let nature unfold around you.
